Dance Styles and Moves[]

Old School (70s-80s)[]

  1. Breaking: it is set to music that is called break-beats. This style suits dancers who are show-offs and fire-crackers.
  2. Locking: dancers lock to light funk music. This style suits those who are energetic and has "interesting" personalities. Particular well-known moves in this style.
    • The Point: point your finger.
    • Wrist Rolls: flick your wrists like the motion of rolling something up.
    • The Lock: stop the body suddenly, like locking yourself in place.
  3. Popping:
    • Boogaloo Style: invented by popping crew The Electric Boogaloos. You twist and turn your body for unique, wild poses, or "pop" individual muscles to keep time with the music. It is also danced to funk but with a heavy emphasis on snare.
    • Animation Style: you make yourself move like an animated image. This style is all about movements that hardly look human.
      • The Wave - looks like a wave passing through your body.
      • Utilize unnatural movements that look like frames of an old piece of animation.
      • The Slide - where you almost float across the floor.
      • King Cobra: you move your neck, shoulders, chest, and hips all in different directions, making yourself look almost otherworldly. It requires highly refined isolations and exceptional body control.

Middle School (80s-90s; Only in Japan)[]

New Jack Swing: the musical type associated with it is also call new jack swing. This style is characterized by moves like:

  • The Running Man
  • The Roger Rabbit
  • The Crab

New School (Since 1990s)[]

  1. Hip-Hop: there is a ton a flow in this style due to the fact that hip-hop music has plenty of room between the beats to slither back and forth or sneak up and down.
  2. House: four count beats of house music are perfect for light, easy steps. This style is all about sharing how you think and feel, so it's great for people who want to communicate through dance.
  3. Voguing: share a lot of culture with house.
  4. Krumping: is a style that came out of its own unique culture. It is all about taking the energy of pent-up anger and turning it into dance. Some notable moves
    • The Stomp: you stomp on the floor with your feet.
    • The Chest Pop: you put all your strength into your chest, so that it looks like it's exploding forward.
    • The Arm Swing: you swing your arm fiercely.
