Wandance Wiki

The Dance Club's Boy/Girl Ratio (ダンス () (だん) (じょ) () Dansubu no Danjohi) is the second chapter of the manga series Wandance, written and illustrated by Coffee.

Summary[]

Kaboku checks out the Dance Club. On Miyao starts stretching exercises with club members and encourages freshmen to participate if they wish so. Hikari volunteers, giving other first years courage to do the same. Kaboku follows.

As rhythm training starts, Kaboku's fear overtakes him, when suddenly he sees On checking on freshmen and giving them one-on-one advices. When it's his turn, Koboku freezes. On eases him. However, that doesn't help, so he excuses himself out. Hikari sees him while the club is on break and starts a conversation with him.

The following day, Kaboku and Hikari talk to each other about the up-coming dance competitions on the staircase. And a misunderstanding appears. The day after, Kaboku asks Hikari to practice together.

At the next club practice, Kaboku's practice comes to fruition, as On was impressed at how well Kaboku catches rhythms.

Plot Details[]

Kaboku enters the Multipurpose Room to check out the Dance Club and is greeted by female club members' gazes, making him feel instantly awkward. Just then, he hears Hikari calling out to him, so he sits down on her right side, realizing that he is the only male student in the room.

As On Miyao - ckub president - starts the stretching exercises with club members, the first-year girl sitting on the right of Kabo asks him about his dancing experience, then proceeds to give him a run down on members' seniority, their position in the practice period and body isolations. Kaboku wonders if Hikari does it too, while he listens in to her conversation with another first-year about their dancing experience and the club president. They see On glancing where they are as she approaches and offers them a chance to join if they already knew how to dance. Everyone hesitates until Hikari asks to join and others start to follow her. Kaboku is taken aback but then gives up and joins in as well. On nudges him slightly, telling him that the club has another male member, who is a second-year but he doesn't show up much. Kaboku stumbles on his words, asking her if guys can join the club and On just smiles kindly, telling him that everyone is welcomed as long as they love dancing.

As rhythm training starts, On demonstrates how to do up and down. Kaboku is amazed, however, he slowly feels self-conscious about his own dancing. Right then, he notices that On is going person to person to give one-on-one advices and starts feeling anxious. He panics when On only takes a quick glance at Hikari's dancing, praises her and immediately walks toward him. Kaboku tenses up under her gaze, worries that he looks weird and then completely freezes. On smiles meaningfully, pats his back while saying some encouragements and leaves for other members. His eyes follow her for a while after that, then he awkwardly and quietly excuses himself out for a break.

Sitting on a bench next to the vending machine outside, feeling detached, Kaboku almost dozes off when Hikari calls out to him. Fearing that Hikari might have seen him almost falling asleep, he stutters. Hikari gets a drink from the vending machine and sits down next to Kaboku while he asks if she is also taking a break. Noticing Kaboku's gaze on her, Hikari turns to look at him too and they both stay silent for a short minute before she stands up and tells him that she is returning. Kaboku awkwardly looks the other way from her. Perhaps sensing that he is reluctant to go back, Hikari offers him a hand to pull him up. Another silent falls onto them before Kaboku stutters and tells her that he can stand up without her help.

The next day, Kaboku walks down the hallways while reflecting on his rhythm training yesterday and catches a glimpse of Hikari talking to her classmates as he walks by her class. They enthusiastically asks her about dancing and her social media accounts, but she light-heartedly tells them that she doesn't have any. During the classroom change for Japanese class, Kaboku and Hikari walk together and Kaboku tells her how he is impressed that she doesn't care about other people's opinions. Hikari, in turn, admires his effort to connect with others around him, despite his shy demeanor and speech impediment. That surprised him. Kaboku and Hikari then sit down onto the staircase and talk about the up-coming dancing competitions that the club intends to participate and she shows her excitement. Moments later, Kaboku asks her what she thinks about while dancing and opens up that in his case, he overthinks and that leads to him forgetting what he is doing when he notices someone's gaze on him. He stumbles on his words, explaining that his stutter is similar, it's fine when he talks to himself but it's a problem when he has a conversation with someone else. Kaboku talks down on himself, adding that maybe it is too soon for him to take part in any competition and Hikari feels guilty, thinking that she needs to be careful when it comes to dancing because it makes him feel the same way stuttering does. Kaboku panics when he realized that she misunderstood him. He thinks of an explanation but fails to convey it with his stutter and eventually gives up, feeling dejected for ruining the mood between them.

Later that night, Kaboku practices body isolations and rhythm training by himself in front of a mirror. He ends up enjoying it and tries a lot of combinations while thinking back to Hikari's words about mentality in dancing. The following day, Kaboku asks Hikari if they can have practice sessions together.

In the hallways, On greets Iori and persuades him to come back to the club, stating that they have two promising new members, alluring to Hikari and Kaboku.

After school, the two promising new members meet up and Kaboku starts dancing to the music. However, contrary to his initial thoughts, even under Hikari's gaze, he still finds it hard to move his body the way he wants and starts talking down to himself. Hikari notices and encourages him to focus on the music and think of nothing else. Only then did he realize what song was playing, and to his surprise, Kaboku finds out that one doesn't need to know everything about music to be a dancer. He unconsciously vibes to it and Hikari makes an excited face telling him that he was riding the music.

The next club meeting, Kaboku focuses on the music and is able to dance effortlessly. He surprises On with his good sense of rhythm, being able to search for nuances in music, which is something that does not come easy to beginners.
